ApoB vs. LDL: the heart marker your checkup might miss
Why do more cardiologists look past basic cholesterol totals to count the specific particles that actually matter.

If your last cholesterol panel came back normal, that is good news — but it may be incomplete. LDL-C measures the cholesterol carried inside particles. ApoB counts the particles themselves, and it is the particles that lodge in artery walls.
Why the two can disagree
Two people can have identical LDL-C and very different ApoB. The one carrying more, smaller particles has more chances to deposit cholesterol into the vessel wall, and carries meaningfully higher risk — while a standard panel calls them equal.
And then there is Lp(a)
Lipoprotein(a) is largely genetic, unaffected by diet, and rarely tested. It only needs measuring once in your life, but knowing it changes how aggressively everything else should be treated — which is why we include it in the Heart & Metabolic panel.
Ask for ApoB at least once. If it is high, you have years of warning and a long list of things that work.
